Soldiers from Alpha Company, 73rd Infantry Battalion and 512th Engineer Battalion working on a school construction project at Sitio Akbual, Brgy Upper Suyan, Malapatan, Saranggani Province were attacked by twenty NPAs belonging to NPA Guerilla Front 71 at around eleven o’clock in the morning of Sunday, November 1.
The soldiers fought back triggering a twenty-minute firefight that forced the NPAs to flee immediately. Nobody from the soldiers got hurt during the firefight.
The three-classroom project was undertaken through the initiative of 73IB and local government officials to address the lack of school facilities in the said barangay. In the true spirit of “bayanihan”, the barangay officials of Brgy. Upper Suyan implemented the project through monetary, material and manpower support from the soldiers, the municipal and provincial government, Congressman Pacquiao and the locals themselves.
“While the local governments and people of Malapatan and Saranggani and Congressman Pacquiao felt the need of the people of Barangay Upper Suyan for their children to have legitimate education, the NPAs showed their anti-people character in this attack,” said MGen Rafael Valencia, Commander of 10ID. The school construction project is being secured by 73rd Infantry Battalion, which immediately conducted pursuit operations against the fleeing NPAs.
